i scream, you scream

we all scream ICE CREAM!!!

so our crew initiated a wonderful social event. we went on an ice cream crawl, if you will... i was not familiar with these crawl activities until i moved up here. some of my friends at school said they had a bar crawl after graduation as some sort of crazy tradition. so the ice cream crawl works the same way, except you are crawling because your tummy hurts from eating so much ice cream. what a great idea!!! there are no pictures, but we will go back to all the places and take pictures because you will never believe it.

also... we were screaming when we almost took a nose-dive into the dang road on the way to out second ice cream stop. so pittsburgh is notorious for having these steep hills. there are a couple that are so steep i thought we were going to crunch right into the pavement. i leaned back in the car just to try and keep the back end from flipping over the front end. it was almost nauseating how vertical this hill was. i am not one to estimate grades, but i am sure we were dangerously close to vertical!!

whew!!! enough screaming... we have to pack.

Back In A Flash!

Whew!!! We got back just in time to saddle up for fall semester. I started classes Monday, and my clinical will start next week. I am really pumped to get to work. It is weird not working. It is kind of like being a little kid again, except school is really hard and there is no time to be bored, haha! This semester I am taking research methods, human disease, patient management, musculoskeletal I, cardiopulmonary I, and my internship (12 hours a week). It is a pretty good load, but it will be about 100x less intense than the summer term... so I have been told.

I think I was just getting use to the 100 degree temps before we left. It is odd how your body just adapts to being that h-o-t! The weather is WONDERFUL here! We had to wear jackets Monday morning to the bus stop... crazy huh? We are taking advantage of this great weather and the holiday weekend with a little camping/hiking excursion. We are really looking forward to it. It will be our very first primitive outing - yikes! What a great way to kick off the semester... don't ya think? Tune in for pictures and who knows what else from the trip!!

So... I ran today with Vanessa and Crystal (friends from my class) up to the park and around the reservoire ( i do not know how to spell that). I always thought I was against running clubs, but it was actually quite fun. I hope we keep it up. I am sick of running on the treadmill in the gym at the seminary, and I do not really want to run alone outside. I hear it is perfectly safe to run alone during the day, but if the club survives... "long live the club!"

This is a rare evening in our household. School is in session, and we are not studying!! haha I really like blogging; maybe this semester will allow for more of it. There is a bug flying around me, so I must go. If you know my relationship with bugs, you will know that it is trying to get in me by any means possible... this one happens to be going for the ear.

Goodnight Moon, Goodnight bug in my ear,

the end of the great donut debate?

on a lighter note, i thought i would mention that i have been craving donuts lately. i have been hard-pressed to find a donut shop around here (i guess they are lost in the same place as the sonics. i mean really - what big city doesn't have a sonic???). needless to say, i am missing shipley's tremendously. but today while driving around doing some earrands for elizabeth, i ran across one! what luck! i was actually trying to find something to do, as the store i needed to partronize did not open for another 45 minutes. i also just happened to be straving because i didn't have time to eat breakfast. and, what made things even better, was that it was a krispy kreme. now, for those of you who don't know, i have had a long-standing debate going with some of the youth over which donut retailer is better - shipley's or krispy kreme. we even were trying to plan a trip to go to shipley's early one morning to get some fresh donuts and then immediately after venture over to tuscaloosa to get some fresh krispy kremes. i have always been of the opinion that shipley's are better. i thought today i would end the debate.

so, i entered the shop with a big smile on my face (and a rumble in my tummy) and made my selection (two chocolate covered cream filled donuts... this should settle things). i will explain my selection in a moment. i also tried one of their new beverages called a chiller because i figured i would need something to wash my donuts down with. apparently, krispy kreme decided it would be a great idea to have a frozen coffee drink. what a novel idea... no one's ever thought of a frozen coffee drink before. i paid for my items and headed out to the car to partake.

and here's what i thought (the verdict you have all been waiting for)... i was really, really pleasantly surprised! the donuts were extremely moist and much more cake-like than shipley's, which really have an altogether different consistency. also, they were much less greasy. the cream filling was extremely light and delicious. it did not taste sugary at all. i felt as though there was a whipped cloud in my moist cake. the chocolate covering was also light and wonderful... once again, not too sugary. it topped the cloud filled moist cake perfectly. my chocolate frozen drink tasted like frozen chocolate whole milk. mmm... delicious memories of frozen school milk. i expected to be sick after all of that, but i felt okay (well, a little sick later, but it wasn't that it was too sweet or too greasy).

overall, i give my krispy kreme selection an a+.

now to the bad stuff. my one big compliant was that there wasn't a very large selection of donuts and other breakfast delicacies. hence, why i chose what i did. i probably would have never gotten that in a shipley's. pretty much all they had was grazed donuts, cream filled, and a few (and i mean a few) fruit jelly filled. and this was a pretty new, very nice krispy kreme. where are the cinammon twists, the chocolate filled, the apple fritters, the blueberry cake, etc.? i was disappointed to say the least. the environment wasn't all that great in the shop either, but i won't hold that against them.

any way, i have to say that i was wrong that i didn't like krispy kreme. as for which donut shop is better, i honestly don't know! i love 'em both! it really depends what mood i am in. which do you like?

cheers from one happy donut eater,

religion, politics, and bumper stickers

so, i was surfing the web the other day looking for harry potter t-shirts and, consequently, ended up on cafepress.com. for those of you who don't know what this site is, it is essentially a site where you can create your own designs to go on t-shirts, bumper stickers, buttons, etc. any way, i saw some interesting stuff while i was on there, so i got back on today to see what i could find.

i was pumped to find some amazing stuff - like a sticker and t-shirt that read "respect your elders or bears will eat you" from one of my all time favorite bible stories - 2 kings 2:23-25 (cam, I know you will be excited about this find!). i also found quite a few things that really disturbed me. the more i looked i began to see stickers that said such things as, "jesus was a liberal" and "i'm the god fearing, gun toting, flag waving, conservative that liberals warned you about!" another read, "so many right-wing christians so few lions." i particularly loved some of the episcopal ones like the one that has the episcopal shield and reads, "challenging fundamentalism since 1789." there must be some proud bishops out there! is this disturbing to anyone else?

maybe i am ignorant or naive, but it seems that political affliation and religious beliefs have become extremely entangled. maybe it has always been like this. it seems pretty twisted to me, but people have apparently managed to wrap their religion beliefs around their political beliefs (or at least this is what it appears from the stickers on this site).

maybe i am opening a bad can of worms here, but i, personally, am sick of people deciding what they believe based on what some crooked politician (or political party) is saying. i am also sick of people asking me if i am a liberal or a conservative or calling me either. I AM A CHRISTIAN, dang it! i am not left wing or right wing. you want to know what i believe - i believe that what jesus said is the only truth. not what obama says. not what bush says. and you might be shocked by this, but jesus was neither a liberal or a conservative. he was god - not a politician. i even had a nice little chat with one of my youth this past year about this after he implied that only liberals were real christians. i kindly asked him if he was pro-life, which he said he was. apparently, he wasn't aware that liberals are pro-choice.

so don't call me a crazy liberal because i am an environmentalist or because i believe that something needs to be done for the poor in this country, and don't think that you can't believe these same things because you consider yourself to be conservative. god blessed us with a world and instructed us to care for it. he also instructed us to seek justice on behalf of the oppressed. but certainly don't call me a conservative either because i am pro-life or because i have a problem with homosexual marriage. i think the bible is extremely clear about these issues. it has been this polarity that has trashed our rich tradition. for instance, somewhere down the line being an evangelical christian became a bad thing because it was considered a "conservative" christian thing to do. since when is spreading the gospel a bad thing? i am sorry to inform you, but if you don't think that spreading the gospel is an essential part of being a christian, then you need to read your bible.

this crap needs to stop. it is time we throw out political titles and reclaim our christian beliefs. can we, as christians, figure out if our political beliefs really match up with what we say we believe in and stop believing things based on our political affiliation? one bumper sticker read, "you're pro-life and pro-death penalty? oh i get it, you're a hypocrite!" there might be more truth in this than we can handle. maybe the real problem is that we have thought far too little about our religious beliefs and simply left them out of our political beliefs. so is it possible for us to begin to fight for true christian values? will there be a time when we vote for politicians not based on what political party they are aligned with but if they really fight for issues based on christian values? can we demand that they stand up for what we believe regardless what the rest of the political party is doing?

maybe this blog will get you talking more than my last one about good movies.

cheers from a radical christian,
jw

this is just a tribute

Welcome to Connor's Happy Birthday Blog.

This is kind of pointless because he will probably never lay eyes on it because he does not own a computer and well... he cannot read, haha. Anyway, I just wanted to post some precious pictures of the grand "Connor and Bibbi Reunion" and other fun stuff!

Trying on a tuxedo can bring on loads of laughs! Who knew it could be so much fun?

I guess you could say we got a little out of control... haha!

Come on, who really needs the shirt.

Yeah... you can call me the professional ring bearer!

TOO CUTE!

Yummmmm! I'll have this!

This kid can grow some carrots.

HAPPY 6th BIRTHDAY, CONNOR!!!

Adam & Abi's Big Day

We made a super quick trip to Tupelo for the wedding. Jon took a Greek quiz Friday morning, and then we were off. we arrived in MS just a few hours later! It was lots of fun and so great to see everyone, even if it was a little crazy...

It seems like weddings are all about the pictures. Of course, we were there all day taking them. It was nice though because eveyone was just hanging out at the church. Here are some from my camera...

Groom and Best Man
"shouldn't the groom be the best man? they should say the groom and a pretty good man." -- Jerry Seinfeld

I think someone should paint this pose.

Looking good guys!

family

We matched. Jon's tie had little green stripes the color of my dress.

I told them to make a funny picture. I am not sure how it turned out... haha

This is the only picture I got of Adam and Abi. I could not take pictures while the phtographer was with them... I only got this one because they were having to stage the picture. I got a quick snap while the photographer was posing them.

OH... the car! "the coop troop" and "cooper's for life" were some of the captions they decorated with, haha!

CONGRATS, Adam & Abi!!! I think you are setting a record for the longest honeymoon as well as the most places visited!

a quick hmmmm....

I SO do not have time to be blogging, but the blog is more appealing than my anatomy notes at the moment. I am celebrating the commencement of exercise physiology. I felt pretty good about the final, but I am not sure if it will be good enough to pull off an A for the course. Let's hope it was.

The "hmmm...." is me wondering who the annoymous commentor from yesterday might be. I first thought it was one of the moms. The moms always comment (THANKS MOMS!), but they are ruled out because they claimed their comments.

Anyway, we would like to introduce some blogging guidelines. We would prefer that all annoymous commentors reveal their identities, please! We do love having comments either way; so if you choose to remain unknown, we understand.

For the small talk...
It is actually hot here. It has been in the 80s the past 2 days. I guess we are getting a little dose of Mississippi up here.

I have 3 more exams, blah! After all that craziness, we will be coming home!!! YAY! August 11th we are flying into Birmingham and will be in Starkville for 2 whole weeks!

I am supposedly finding out my clinical placements for next year tomorow, but I am not getting my hopes up yet. This has been a slow process, and they keep pushing back this revelation date. boo!

Well, I think I will top off my celebration evening with a little Harry Potter. I am only on the third book, so no one spoil the ending for me, please!

Goodnight Muggles,
